This is the Pentagon Channel Report.

The Pentagon's top leadership went to Capitol Hill Friday to testify on detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

Before the full Senate armed services committee and packed hearing room, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld accepted responsibility for the abuses and expressed his remorse over what happened to some detainees.

"To those Iraqis that were mistreated by members of US armed forces, I offer my deepest apology. It was inconsistent with the values of our nation, it was inconsistent with the teachings of the military to men and women of armed forces, and it was certainly, fundamentally un-American."

The secretary's testimony was briefly interrupted by protesters in the audience who were escorted from the chamber.

Mr. Rumsfeld complimented the chain of command for prompt response once charges of abuse became known, and went on to say the handlings of the scandal would be a demonstration of American values and beliefs.

"we value human life, we believe in individual freedom and in the rule of law. For those beliefs, we send men and women of armed forces abroad to protect the right of our own people and to give others, who aren't Americans, the hope of future or freedom.

Part of that mission, part of what we believed in, is making sure that when wrong-doing or scandal do occur, that they are not covered up, they're exposed, they're investigated, and the guilty are brought to justice."

Six soldiers from Abu Ghraib face criminal charges for abusing detainees and investigations into the possible coopability(←これ多分ウソです。こんな単語ありませんでした m(_ _)m ) of others are still under way.

I'm Army Sergeant Lori Gilchrest for the Pentagon Channel.
