I think he had always yearn for great achievements, of course, even President for two terms, he had won the Nobel Peace Prize.

But this is an opportunity to contribute something of real value to science and that, that held extreme appeal for him.

He was about five-foot eight-inches tall, two hundred twenty pounds when he started on his trip. He lost a quarter of his body weight during this expedition, so he lost fifty-five pounds while on this journey.

He did have great hopes for science on this expedition.

right today this river is in one of the most remote areas on the planet and in 1914, it was just a blank spot on the map.
